5 houseplants that will thrive in the heat

Summer has arrived, temperatures are climbing, and the heatwave is forecast to continue for the remainder of the week. While you endeavor to keep your house cool in the heat, one area that you should be clued up on is your houseplants; after all, they need plenty of care and attention.

If you’ve got succulents or cacti sitting on the edge of your window sill or on a shelf, then don’t panic, as they will actually do very well with the extra sunshine.

To help keep your home green during the summer, Balaji Nursery has prepared the perfect guide of houseplants that thrive in the heat and can weather the hottest months of the year, so if you don’t already possess one of them, hurry down to your closest garden shop quickly.

1. Succulents

It’s no wonder these bright plants are in style right now, given their beauty and straightforward upkeep. Although green succulents are more suited to indoors than their brighter varieties, position your plant near a window that gets light all day so it’s certain to grow! Since its thick and strong leaves store moisture, you only need to water it once a week, and you will even be forgiven after two weeks of neglect!

Top tip: Keep your plant as close to the window as possible.

2. Cacti

We’re all guilty of periodically ignoring our indoor plants, especially in warmer temperatures when we’re more concerned with hydrating ourselves. Luckily for us, cacti prefer a sunny and warm place; surviving well in direct sunshine and being watered once a month is good. And with plenty of variation in shapes and sizes, it’s a simple way to introduce green into your house without the hassle!

Top tip: Water very sparingly; it’s preferable to undersea than overwater.

3. Aloe Vera

Renowned for their therapeutic capacity to heal wounds, aloe vera plants are rather hardy. Often known as the ‘plant of immortality‘, it’s easy to understand how that moniker was earned since they can live in all kinds of settings and require minimum upkeep. Simply put your plant in direct sunlight, water it every now and then, and you’ll have one healthy aloe vera!

Top tip: Aloe loves to be placed in a larger container once every 2 to 3 years.

4. Devil’s Ivy

Devil’s Ivy is a popular choice for indoor plants, both hardy and attractive. Think little maintenance and no-nonsense, able to adapt and flourish in brilliant indirect light and low light. The plant only has to be watered rarely, so even when temperatures are high, there’s no need to worry about it withering. Their larger leaves also transpire, releasing extra water into the air and cooling themselves and the surrounding surroundings, which helps with the humidity in your home.

Top tip: Devil’s Ivy flourishes when you leave their soil dry up between waterings.

5. Ponytail Palm (Dracaena)

Ponytail palms surely assist in creating that tropical, beachy atmosphere in the comfort of your own home. Easy to keep happy and requiring little effort to grow and thrive, they are the perfect indoor plant. The Mexican native is happiest when basking in a bright, sunny area, but can quickly adapt to low-light settings. The idea is to allow the soil to dry out fully between waterings.

Top tip: Beware of yellow leaves or a squishy trunk; this suggests you are overwatering.
