November Lawn Care Tips – Autumn Lawn Maintenance
Starting grass maintenance for the winter season is best done around November.
Although it’s too late to plant most grass seeds right now, you can still use our specially designed Winter Green Grass Seed for fertilization and moss control (November Lawn Care Tips). Replace frequent mowing with leaf clearing, which will help prepare your lawn for the often more severe December and January conditions.
November, should I treat my grass differently?
Here’s your “to-do”November Lawn Care Tips schedule:
• Gather leaves and other trash from garden beds or trees.
• Use our specially designed Autumn & Winter grass fertilizer to keep your grass green and healthy during winter.
• As we mow the grass, pull any weeds you can reach.
• Reduce and aerate gloomy areas to help fight moss.
• Mow if needed, but this is probably your final cut of the year.
Can one still cut grass in November?
This is likely your last cut of the year, but you can still mow in November. If you have to mow your lawn and the grass is still growing, go for it. But be cautious not to trim the grass too short; else, brown patches throughout the winter may result.
This is an ideal moment to elevate your mower blades to their highest position. To keep the grass healthy, let it grow tall now; it will grow more aggressively when the temperature rises. The ideal is to keep to a height of around two inches of grass.
You also keep an eye out for slugs; they enjoy chilly, moist surroundings like those of recently cut grass, so ensure that all clippings are gathered and placed on your compost heap.
Mower Maintenance
Now is an excellent time to do some maintenance while you winterize your lawn mower and other garden tools. Before you store your mower and other tools, clean and maintain them so they are in good shape for the spring and summer.
Should I work on my lawn in November?
Fertilizing is one of the best ways to provide your lawn with nutrients before winter sets in. In addition to shielding roots from cold weather, an autumn and winter lawn treatment will provide it a kick-start of energy and increase grass thickness. Because they are designed to supply the correct nutrients throughout the colder months, fall and winter lawn feeds are crucial.
Nutrients like potassium and magnesium found in autumn and winter fertilizers are meant to keep your grass robust all through the winter. After you have mowed your lawn, apply your autumn grass feed, preferably following a decent fall of rain.
I could scarify my yard in November
We advise you not to scarify your grass right now in this season. It might do more damage than benefit in cool situations when grass development is sluggish. Given such a severe treatment, the grass will struggle to recover.
If you find that you have an issue with thatch, wait until spring when grass is growing more quickly. Aeration can aid; so, enhance circulation and drainage by means of a garden fork.
Aerating Your Lawn November
Often during this time of year, aeration is needed. It creates channels between plant roots so that water may enter them readily without causing pools on top of the ground where fungus and moss most likely flourish. This lessens foot traffic harm as well as people crossing damp grass.
Make sure you just create little holes for drainage while aerating the grass throughout winter. In cold weather, bigger holes can freeze and expand, damaging your grass. Stay with a rolling lawn aerator or garden fork.
Sowing grass seed in November
November, which is usually too cold for grass seed planting, allows our Winter Green Grass Seed to prolong the sowing season, allowing germination to occur at soil temperatures of just 5 degrees.
Dormant sowing, in which the temperature gets quite cold, is the second choice. Although results won’t show until the spring, if your grass isn’t growing and you’re willing to wait, there’s another option. Our special article, Dormant Seeding: Everything You Need to Know, will allow you to grasp whether it’s the correct answer for you.
Moss & Weeds
Since weeds fight with your lawn for space, light, and nutrients, weed whatever area you can access. It’s preferable to keep all of these away, as they might be limited in the winter. But given sluggish development, weeds are not expected to be a major threat to your grass at this point.
This time of year, moss can pose problems; you will see it more when grass growth slows down. Moss-prone areas require constant maintenance. Moss grows in dark regions and prefers moist soils; hence, keep on top of any spots or eliminate them right away as they start to grow.
Aerating the lawn helps with drainage and lessens the damp conditions that enable moss to flourish. This will help to prevent moss and improve the appearance of your grass.
Pruning and trimming help to reduce shadows
Big shrubs and trees can produce shaded spaces where moss will flourish. Growing grass in gloomy regions may be challenging at the best of times; so, think about cutting and pruning to minimize shadow, thereby enabling the grass to grow stronger and healthier over time. Trimming trees in late fall is ideal instead of any other time of year, as it will help their recuperation period.
Before they ruin the yard throughout the winter with an ugly mess, gather leaves and other trash. If not cleaned up before, this might harm fresh growth next spring.
Even trees and plants can be pruned to gather leaves before they drop. This will allow grass to maximize the little quantity of sunlight when days are shorter than usual by preventing them from falling on the lawn and minimizing shaded spots.
Using a rake, carefully gather dropped leaves from the grass surface. You run the danger of harming the grass if you sweep too aggressively.
November Lawn Maintenance Advice
• Pests: worms will keep producing castings during winter, and brushing them away might be challenging in damp soil. Remember that worms benefit your soil; hence, the best way to avoid casting is to remain on top of leaf gathering. It will lessen the quantity that develops on the surface of your grass but not completely halt the castings.
Iron or ferrous sulfate can also be used to deter worms from reaching the ground’s surface.
• Grass Diseases: during this time of year, search for grass rust. If your grass suffers from this, it will appear yellow and powdery. Although a nitrogen-rich fertilizer will cure it, this is best done in the spring. Another lawn ailment frequent in the moist circumstances November brings is fusarium.
Aeration can help to improve this state, as we noted in our October lawn care column. If it lasts, you may have to scarify the grass in spring. See our special post for further information on typical lawn diseases and causes.
• Frost & Snow: As it settles on your lawn, be aware that it may be vulnerable to frost or snow. Although November frost is normally mild, British weather is erratic; hence, severe frosts or snow might be conceivable. Should frost develop, avoid walking on the grass.
Brittle grass blades might break under your feet and ruin your landscape. Review those dark places as frosts won’t melt here as soon and ensure your garden is sheltered from the wind. This will help protect your lawn from the harsh winter elements.
Following these guidelines should help you keep a lawn that looks attractive during fall and winter. We can maintain our lawns looking great all year long with a few tweaks, such as aerating more often if moss starts to grow, gathering leaves, and cutting back plants or trees! We can also assist with that; our lawn care diary will show you in great detail every month of the year.
